"'LONGSHOREMEN HERE JOIN SHIPPING STRIKE," Toronto Star. September 13, 1943. Page 2. ---- Object to Labor Board Hearing Case Until Third Member Named ---- Montreal, Sept. 13 - (CP) National war labor board hearings of disputes involving "several thousand" freight handlers across Canada will await "the time when the board is fully constituted," F. H. Hall, vice-president of the International Brotherhood of Railway Clerks, so announced today.
He said he had sent a telegram to the labor board "declining to proceed with hearings scheduled for tomorrow and Wednesday and had urged Hon. Humphrey Mitchell, minister of labor, "to take immediate steps to fully constitute the board."
The labor board now has only two members, as the service of J. L. Cohen, K.C., labor representative, was terminated by federal cabinet action.
Meanwhile Mr. Hall gave this picture of the situation as far as A.F.L. freight handlers are concerned:
The strike of 1.800 Canadian Steamship Lines freight handlers and sympathizers from the Clarke Steamship Line in various St. Lawrence waterway ports continues, virtually paralyzing the movement of waterborne freight from the lakehead to Quebec.
Representatives of 3.500 C.P.R. hourly-rated employees from coast to coast, demanding vacations with pay and scheduled to appear before the labor board tomorrow, will not appear.
Representatives of 650 stevedores, employed by the Eastern Canada Stevedoring Co. of Halifax and demanding wage increases, will not appear at a scheduled hearing before the labor board.
Representatives of 500 Canadian Pacific and Canadian National freight handlers of Montreal, demanding wage increases, will not appear at a scheduled hearing before the labor board.
Representatives of 250 Canadian Pacific longshoremen at Saint John. N.B., demanding wage increases, will not appear at a scheduled hearing before the labor board.
Strike Spreads Here One hundred and fifty longshoremen, all C.S.L. employees in Toronto today joined the shipping strike which has involved five Great Lakes and St. Lawrence river ports.
Frank H. Hall, president of the board of Railway and Steamship Clerks, Freight Handlers, Express and Station Employees union. an- nounced: "The national war labor board has set Wednesday for the hearing of the case and the union has declined to proceed until the board is fully constituted.
"By an order-in-council made public last week. J. L. Cohen is no longer a member of the board. The union, on my instructions, has declined to be heard until a labor representative is appointed."
Mr. Hall said that freight at the head of the lakes is "completely tied up" there. He said, longshoremen employed by the Canadian Pacific Steamships and the Canada Steamship lines are on strike. The Montreal strike included employees of the Clarke Steamship Lines Ltd.
A C.S.L. official said that freight loading and unloading "is moving as usual in Toronto. We have a permanent staff here," was his only comment. There are no picket lines, he added.
No lake ships were unloaded at Montreal during the week-end. But at Fort William, white collar workers turned out to move part of the cargo of the passenger and package freight carrier Keewatin. All package freight boats at Fort William are idle, a C.S.L. official said.
The Keewatin cleared Fort William several hours later and with part of her cargo unloaded after all available labor, including office workers, trucked freight from the vessel to the shed for hours. At Sarnia, the C.S.L. steamer Huronic remained unloaded after 75 dock handlers there walked out in sympathy.

Review #199: Springbank 15
46% ABV, natural colour, non-chill-filtered  Distillery: Springbank Distillery, Campbeltown, Scotland Producer: J&A Mitchell & Co Ltd.
Springbank distillery holds a very special place in the hearts of many single malt connoisseurs. It is one of only a small number of remaining family run distilleries in Scotland, owned almost since its founding days by the Mitchell family. This heritage and tradition is reflected in the production methods and equipment that is being used at the distillery, and a whisky that is old-fashioned in style and of the highest quality. Springbank is one of only two distilleries in Scotland to carry out all steps of the production process on site, from the floor maltings to the bottling plant, which allows them to be in full control of every step of the production. Lastly, like no other distillery Springbank puts great value on its place in the local community, as an employer and local business, by supporting local charities and by employing as many people as possible, instead of mechanizing and automating production steps.
Springbank distillery is located in the fishing village of Campbeltown on the southern tip of the Kintyre peninsula on the Scottish west coast. At some point during the 19th century Campbeltown was home to at least 34 operating distilleries, and was dubbed Whisky Capital of the World by whisky writer Alfred Barnard, when he visited the town in 1885. The distillery was founded in 1828 by William Reid, on the grounds of a previous illicit distillery operated by Archibald Mitchell. When Reid got into financial troubles in 1837, he sold the distillery to his brothers-in-law John and William Mitchell, the sons of Archibald. Archibald Mitchell’s two other sons Hugh and Archibald Jr. were the founders of Riechlachan distillery, located next door to Springbank. Like many small-scale distillery owners at the time, the Mitchell’s were all also farmers, and in 1872 John and William had a falling out, allegedly over a disagreement about sheep. As a result, William decided to leave Springbank and join his two other brothers at Riechlachan, before founding Glengyle distillery. Meanwhile John Mitchell took over full ownership of Springbank distillery, with his son Alexander joining the business in 1897, and since then, the company is known as J&A Mitchell, named after John and Alexander.
Following the whisky boom of the late 19th century, the Scottish whisky industry, and the distilleries in Campbeltown in particular entered a prolonged period of recession. Triggered by over production and a decline in quality it was prolonged by two world wars, Prohibition in the United States, as well as a change in whisky drinker’s palate towards lighter styles of whisky, different to the one produced in Campbeltown. Thus followed the rise of blended Scotch and Speyside as the larges whisky producing region in Scotland and the downfall of Campbeltown. By 1934 Springbank and Glen Scotia were the only operational distilleries left in Campbeltown.
In 1973 Springbank began to produce heavily peated, double distilled whisky in addition to the existing 2.5 times distilled spirit. This malt is marketed as Longrow, named after one of the long closed distilleries in Campbeltown. The distillery had to close from 1979 to 1987, and upon reopening, Hedley G. Wright, the great-great grandson of John Mitchell and current owner of Springbank, decided to focus on the production of single malt whisky instead of selling most of the distillery’s output to blenders. The on-site floor maltings were reopened in 1992, and in 1997 the company introduced Hazelburn, a triple distilled, unpeated single malt.
Today, the range of single malt whiskies produced at Springbank distillery consists of the three brands Springbank (2.5 distilled, light/medium peated), Longrow (double distilled, heavily peated) and Hazelburn (triple distilled and unpeated). The Springbank core range consists of a 10 year old, 12 year old cask strength, 15, 18 as well as 21 year old bottling that is complemented by an ever changing series of special releases and cask finishes.
Even though the company does not release any specifics, the 15 year old Springbank has the highest percentage of sherry cask influence in the core range. It would appear that the casks are mostly refill sherry casks with some proportion of bourbon casks in the vatting. Like all Springbank whiskies, the 15 year old is bottled at 46% ABV, is natural in colour and is not chill filtered.
Eye: I’ve never been a particular fan of the Springbank packaging, but compared to the new look, the old Springbank design, in use from about 2007 until the start of this year, looks profusely elegant. But what really counts is the whisky, and in case of the Springbank 15 it is deep copper in colour. Nose: Noticeably sherried and what can only be described as funky. Sour apple and pear, dried apricot, Fino sherry, black tea, walnut, cinnamon, vanilla, aniseed, liquorice, menthol and sea air. Palate: Full bodied and robust, with a superb balance of sweet, sour and umami flavours, and undercurrent of salty brine and tannic bitterness. Sherry sweetness, maple syrup, pulled pork, prunes, blackcurrants, orange peel, kumquat, ground almond, with tannic wood bitters, liquorice, seaweed and soft peat smoke in the background. Finish: Medium to long with the smoke becoming more pronounced, leather and mineral oil notes and some wood char becoming discernible. Verdict: In my opinion, the Springbank 15 can only be described as a masterpiece. The depth of flavour and exquisite balance are almost unrivalled in the 15 year age range. It is definitely a whisky that will need a bit of experience to be fully appreciated, but when you “get” it, it’s hard to let go. 92/100

“STRIKERS SAID FEW AT LONGUE POINTE,” Montreal Gazette. August 8, 1942. Page 13 & 19. --- Efficiency Maintained at 80 P.C. of Normal in Canadian Car & Foundry Plant ---- UNIONS IN DISPUTE ---- Steelworkers Protest Refusal of Firm, Employees Association, to Accept Board Decision ---- Strike situation at the Longue Pointe plant of the Canadian Car and Foundry Co. Ltd. which broke early yesterday morning with failure of hundreds of workers on the day shift to report for duty was described as unchanged last evening by company officials, who said that uneventful arrival of the 3 p.m. shift for work left the plant about 150 workers short for mat period of the day.
George G. Walsh, plant personnel director, said last evening that production was being maintained at an efficiency rate of about 80 per cent of normal.
The strike, growing out of fruit less negotiations between representatives of the United Steelworkers of America and of the Employees Association of the Canadian Car and Foundry Co., Ltd.. Longue Pointe plant occurred at 7 a.m. yesterday.
R. J. Lamoureux. district organizer for the Steelworkers. said the employees "acted on their own" following a meeting late Thursday night. The strike was termed as a protest against the alleged refusal of the firm and the Employees' Association to show willingness to accept the decision of a conciliation board which had been ordered by Ottawa to investigate the dispute.
Negotiations between the dissent ing union organizations and company officials broke down Wednesday when Steelworkers representatives walked out on a conference in the offices of Bernard Rose. K.C. Industrial Disputes Inquiry Commissioner.
Mr. Rose said last evening the matter was out of his hands since he had despatched his report on the deadlock to the Department of Labor at Ottawa. BOARD IS NAMED. Acknowledging receipt yesterday of a telegram from M. M. McLean, of Ottawa, director of Industrial Relations and Registrar, Mr. Walsh said the company had selected D. A. Paterson, secretary-treasurer of Builders Exchange, to represent it on the conciliation board. The telegram stated that the Minister of Labor, Hon. Humphrey Mitchell, had established a board of conciliation and investigation under provisions of the Industrial Disputes Investigation Act. The Steelworkers nominee is R. L CaJder, K.C. Stating that the current dispute was "between the two union organizations' and not between the Steelworkers and the company. Mr. Walsh expressed surprise at the Ottawa message involving the company. "The subject has already been investigated by Mr. Rose, and secondly, the company has never refused to negotiate in the matter." he said.
Conflicting reports indicated that anywhere between 350 and 600 workers were involved when the strike started yesterday morning as workers arrived, most of them by street car, at the plant gate. Company spokesmen and officials of the Employees' Association said that extra efforts by those not taking part in the strike enabled production to be maintained without serious interruption. Efficiency was reported to have dropped to about 60 per cent in the morning, but had improved gradually, with about 80 per cent, efficiency being recorded after the arrival of the afternoon shift.
Advised of the strike action yesterday. Captain Joseph Levesque and constables of No. 34 station went to the scene. Crowds of workers gathered outside the plant were dispersed and police vigilance maintained throughout the day. No trouble was reported. By early yesterday afternoon the situation was termed "well under control." with only a few men lounging about m the vicinity of the plant. A cordon of police was placed along the Notre Dame street entrance side o the plant in the event of any trouble with the 3-to-ll p.m. shift. the changeover later being reported quiet.
Both voicing their determination not to yield In their respective stands toward the situation, opposing union officials reiterated their claims last night. The Steelworkers have claimed the right to become the sole bargaining agency for the plant workers as the result cf a recent ballot which gave them a 979 to 756 decision; and refuse to accept any other arrangement other than to be agency for the 979. with other workers not to be discriminated against should a Steelworkers-company contract be signed. On the other hand, the Employees Association, with H. Mockerside, president. refuses to have the Steelworkers as sole bargaining agency in the plant, since the difference in number of votes gained was slim, and because they seek to protect their 758 supporters.
Suggestion by Mr. Walsh that joint contracts be agreed upon, one for each organization with the company, has been refused by the Steelworkers.

Review #176: Kilkerran 12
46% ABV, natural colour, non-chill-filtered Producer: Glengyle Distillery, Campbeltown, Scotland Owner: J&A Mitchell & Co Ltd. (via Mitchell's Glengyle Ltd.)
The original Glengyle distillery was founded in Campbeltown 1872 by William Mitchell. Prior to founding Glengyle, William and his brother John were the owners of Springbank distillery, which they had bought from the original founder, their brother-in-law William Reid, in 1837. But the two brothers, who were also farmers besides managing the distillery, had a falling out, allegedly over a disagreement about sheep, and William decided to leave Springbank in 1872. He briefly joined his two other brothers Hugh and Archibald Mitchell at Riechlachan distillery, but shortly after founded his own distillery, Glengyle, just a few hundred metres down the road from Springbank.
William Mitchell sold the business in 1919, but due to the downturn in the Campbeltown whisky industry during the early parts of the 20th century, the distillery was closed permanently only six years later, in 1925. However, unlike most other closed-down distilleries in Campbeltown, that were demolished over the years, the buildings of Glengyle distillery remained standing throughout the 20th century. The building was used for many different purposes over the years, including as a farmer’s cooperative and as a rifle range for the local rifle club.
In 2000 the distillery was bought back by the descendants of William and John Mitchell, the owners of Springbank distillery, J&A Mitchell, and over the next four years the buildings were turned back into a working distillery. Since there was no distillery equipment left from the old Glengyle distillery, new equipment had to be brought in however. Most of it was bought new, but some equipment was reused from other distilleries. For example the stills, condensers and spirit safe were sourced from Ben Wyvis distillery, a former malt distillery that operated inside the Invergordon grain distillery in the northern Highlands between 1965 and 1977. The stills were modified slightly for Glengyle, the shape was adjusted slightly, and the lyne arms at the top of the stills were slanted upwards. This was done in order to achieve more reflux inside the still, which increases the amount of copper contact of the spirit vapours, and in turn results in a lighter, more delicate spirit.
The new Glengyle distillery began production on 25 March 2004, and became the first new distillery to open in Scotland in the 21st century. The barley malt comes from the floor maltings at Springbank and is lightly peated, to the same level as the malt for Springbank single malt. The peat is harvested from bogs in the Campbeltown area, and some of the barley is also grown locally. Glengyle distillery is operated only part-time of the year, by the staff from Springbank distillery. The first bottling of single malt from Glengyle became available in 2007 under the name Kilkerran. Reason for the different name is that the name ‘Glengyle’ is owned by the neighbouring Glen Scotia distillery’s parent company Loch Lomond Distillers, and used by them for a blended malt whisky. The name Kilkerran comes from the Gaelic name of a settlement of St Kieran, that was in the area where Campbeltown stands today. Following the initial release, Glengyle launched a series of limited Kilkerran “Work In Progress” bottlings for the following 7 years, with each release being matured and finished in a different type of oak cask.
Last year, in 2016, the first of Glengyle’s whisky reached the age of 12 years, and finally the long awaited first ‘regular’ distillery bottling was made available, the Kilkerran 12 year old. Released on 12 August 2016, it is the first of the distillery’s core range, and as such should be available, albeit in limited quantities, for the foreseeable future. It is made from 70% whisky matured in ex-bourbon casks and 30% in ex-sherry casks. It is bottled at 46% ABV, is not chill-filtered and of natural colour.
Eye: The cardboard tube and bottle feature the same striking Kilkerran design, established by the “Work In Progress” series, with bold lettering around the Kilkerran Church Tower triptych. The whisky has a lovely yellow gold colour and develops a lovely bit of scotch mist when diluted. Nose: Earthy and herbaceous, with heather, sorrel, hay and yeast, then some fruity aromas with lemon zest, overripe apple and peach, sourdough bread, walnuts, vanilla and ginger all with a backdrop of salty sea air and gentle peat smoke. Palate: Full flavoured and mouth coating, with the peat influence much more noticeable than on the nose. Sweet honey and malty cereal, ripe pear, zesty lemon, grapefruit, vanilla, black pepper, soft mint, nutty oak, pine cone, brine, some medicinal flavours and gentle, yet very present peat smoke in the background. Finish: Medium to long with soft ashy smoke, bitter almond, cocoa, and a gentle spicy heat.  Verdict: Wonderfully complex, flavourful and extremely moreish, with a simply superb balance between sweet, tart, salty and peaty flavours. A masterpiece of whisky making. 89/100

Abbot’s Court, now demolished, many large tanneries surrounded Whitehouse street.
Pigs were kept in Hope Square, North Street, Bedminster Parade, York Street and at the rear of Brown’s Buildings in Whitehouse Street.
But an inspector investigating a complaint of pigs being kept in Stillhouse Lane, found them in clean condition and not a nuisance.
Many complained of Henry Williams burning pigs and melting fat at his piggery, but nothing seems to have been done about this complaint.
Tanneries and their affiliated trades were a common cause of complaint, mainly due to the discharge of effluent from their premises into the surrounding areas. In 1850 the tanneries on either side of East Street were guilty of this and the large tannery, which was then on the site of what is now Courage Western Ltd, was cited as being particularly offensive.

In 1856 John Baker was charged at Bristol Police Court with stealing three coats from the tavern, the property of Mr Knowland, the landlord. Baker, a recruit, to whom Mr Knowland was said to have shown great kindness, was said to have confessed his guilt and to be very contrite and on the landlord.s intercession the charge was dropped and Baker handed over to his sergeant.
In January 1870 it was reported that for many years Mr Knowland had placed on the smoking tables each Saturday a box in aid of the Royal Infirmary and General Hospital, He had regularly, until recently before his health failed, shaken the box before each customer in the 2 rooms with a friendly request for a penny. The collection for 1861 amounted to 25 guineas, in 1869 was £25 4s.
Mr Knowland was also a visitor at St Peter’s Hospital and Robert James ‘a big powerful man’ who had been an inmate and knew him from this work was taken to court on 1868 for threatening him when he would not offer employment.
In 1883 Mrs Knowland reported the collection boxes holding £2 12s 8d.
In March 1884 Albert O’ Brien and Albert Richards were charged with having stolen a pint measure from the pub. It was noticed by a policeman that the measure was marked with ‘Knowland, Adam and Eve’ on the side. O’Brien said that he had ordered the beer just before closing time and could not finish it all so he had taken the cup away and was going to return it the next week. They were fined 11s without costs.

Chatterton Square stood in the Redcliffe area dominated by St.Mary Redcliffe church. The area was a mixture of medieaval and Georgian buidings and industry (pottery and glassmaking kilns) much of which were lost in bombing raids during WW II.There is still a Chatterton Square but it is a modern development of office blocks and flats. It was named after the teenage poet Thomas Chatterton and if you look at the 19th century painting attached stood not far behind the church.

Many working class families in East Bristol lived in Victorian terraced houses without baths or inside toilets.
They often opened directly onto the pavement. In the Barton Hill area, they had been built for the Great Western Cotton factory workers.
Some streets (like Aiken Street) were named after the directors of the company.

1871 Arcade, Lower, St. James’s, Broadmead
These Arcades are still popular working-class shopping centres. They afford both entertainment by the variety of displays at all times and shelter in rainy weather.
I dare say that many a purchase has thus been made which was not intended when the buyer entered one or the other of these hundred-year-old ranges of shops with their dwellings.
Many people seem to regard them as a right of way, but they are private property and on Sundays the closed gates are evidence of that fact be distinguished as St. James Upper and Lower Arcades.’

These two historic landmarks built in 1824 as a covered shopping way were complete in every detail as originally built with attractive bow-fronted shops and an entrance flanked by fluted ionic columns, and so for many it is more satisfying than the better-known Burlington Arcade.

civilwarscholars.com/?p=11948 2436 words
This is taken from one of six essays written for Sewanee Review from 1913 to 1915 by Ambrose Robert Hite Ranson (1831-1919) about his growing up years living at his family home, Gap View, and his experiences during the Civil War as a Confederate officer. His observations are very informative about daily life pre-war amid unacceptable observations condoning the enslavement of other human beings. His account is still important in its rendering of daily work on a farm in the 1840s and 1850s in Jefferson County, Virginia, one of the most agricultural counties in the Virginias. These conditions were substantially different in the northern Shenandoah Valley when compared to the brutal monocultures in the deep South. Enslavement in Jefferson County, based on writings of those – white and black – who lived here then – was one of diverse work, the pervasive fear of being sold south, pockets of profound cruelty, and the tantalizing nearness of the option of escaping to freedom.

1. There_was_a_wedding_Bedington There was a wedding in our neighborhood at Bedington, the home of the Bedingers, and my
2. sister_was_bridesmaid_Strother_WVU 3. to_her_cousin_Fannie_Davenport_wvhistoryonview sister was bridesmaid to her cousin. In those days a house party was arranged in much more simple fashion than now. The houses had few rooms, but generally very large ones, and all the bridesmaids were quartered in one room. At this wedding there was a girl from Hoboken,
4. a_Miss_Sevens_Judy_James_Ware a Miss Stevens, of the wealthy family of that name.
When my sister returned home she did not unpack her trunk until late at night. My father was sitting up reading, when she entered the room in great distress, holding in her hands Miss Stevens’s jewel-case, containing such jewels as we had never seen before. It was
5. midnight_and_very_cold midnight and very cold, and a heavy snow was falling.
6. Frank_his_trusted_servant_Strother_WVU My father sent for Frank, his trusted servant, and giving the case into his hands and telling him it was worth more than all he owned, ordered him to get a horse and ride to Bedington four miles distant and give the case into the hands of Miss Stevens, and no one else. Frank made the ride that stormy night and compelled the lady to come down in her night clothes and receive the jewel-case and write a letter of acknowledgement. Some careless maid had packed Miss Steven’s jewels in my sister’s trunk.
7. Before_the_railroad_Map_Maryland_1831 Before the railroad was built, Frank drove the wagon of flour to Baltimore, and, even after the railroad was built, still Frank went every year before Christmas to Baltimore
8. load_of_flour_Currier_Ives with a load of flour, bringing back a load which made everybody, white and black, happy at that festival.
9. arrived_after_dark_Strother_Feb_1855_P_300 He generally arrived after dark, and the big canopied wagon was driven to the front door and left there during the night, the six great smoking horses having been led away to the stable. After supper the wagon was unloaded and the treasures revealed to us, the children.
In those days the factor, or commission merchant, had duties which are unknown now. When he sold the flour he filled orders for every conceivable want of the family. I met an old factor, after I came to Baltimore to live, who told me he had, with the assistance of his
10. entire_trousseau_of_many_a_bride_Metropolitan_Museum wife, bought and had made up the entire trousseau of many a bride, besides outfits for the entire families of his friends in the country. The reader can imagine what an event Frank’s arrival with his wagon was to us. I have now a handsome service of china which was brought from Baltimore on Frank’s wagon. One Christmas observance the negroes had which was very peculiar.
11. when_the_hogs_were_killed_wikipedia When the hogs were killed in December they preserved the bladders and, inflating them and tying the necks tightly to retain the air, they hung them up to dry, and on Christmas morning, while the stars were shining, they laid them on the frozen ground under the windows of the
12. and_exploded_them_by_stamping_on_them_Harpers_Aug_1872_P_350 white folks and exploded them by stamping on them, thus awakening the family and saluting them on the arrival of the great festival.
13. one_of_the_songs_Ox_Cart_Van_Gogh I remember part of one of the songs which the ox-driver sang in a slow monotone, sitting on the pole of the ox-cart, and keeping time to the slow, swinging steps of the oxen: "See the bull go to school, hooie booie, hooie booie, See the bull go to school, hooie booie John. See the bull go to school, with his book on his horn, And that is the last of old blind John. See the cow build the mill, hooie booie, hooie booie, See the cow build the mill, hooie booie John. See the cow build the mill, water runnin’ up the hill, An that is the last of old blind John.” The verses were endless and seem to have been extemporized as he drove along.
14. The_masters_part_was_not_difficult_Harpers_August_1856_P_317 The master’s part was not difficult. He was kind because kindness paid him well. He took care of his slave because it was money in his pocket to do so, and money out of his pocket if he did not. Of course, there were other and higher motives in individuals, but we must look for a motive for the multitude. That the negro was better housed, better fed, better clothed, and better looked after in sickness than now, was simply because the owner had money at stake. He had warm clothing, plenty of wholesome food, and a good doctor when ill, because of that money.
In September the cloth and yarn for his winter clothing were brought home from the factory, and the work of making up began and was only finished at Christmas. In every household there was a woman who could cut out the garments, and all the younger girls had been taught how to sew and knit. During the year, all the girls, in clean frocks, assembled in some room in the great house every morning, and the class of sewers and knitters was presided over by some
15. spectacled_old_negro_woman_Sojourner_Truth_wikipedia spectacled old negro woman, whose word was law to them. The work of making up the clothing and knitting yarn socks went on under her supervision, and at Christmas every man and woman on the place appeared in new clothes and new shoes and warm woolen stockings. Every man had an

Some of them chewed it and some of them smoked it in their corncob pipes, when tobacco was raised from the virgin soil. Every year a farmer would clear a small patch of ground, sufficient for the wants of his farm, and plant it in tobacco. The fragrance of the negro’s corncob pipe was notorious, and was due to the fact that no fertilizer had been used in growing his tobacco.

Stone homes in Berkeley County are rare, but our Fall Tour is fortunate to be able to showcase five – one in Bedington, two in Martinsburg, one in Arden and one in Jones Springs. Our sixth home is a "green" and eco-friendly home located at Broomgrass in beautiful Back Creek Valley.
One of the finest, early, native limestone farm complexes in our country is the Lick Run Plantation, located at 1210 Bedington Road. The complex consists of a beautiful stone mansion, a huge stone barn and a stone mill. The mansion house has never before been open to the public.
The Light family was a very well-known family of Berkeley County. In 1816, Samuel Light sold the Peter Light mill, stone house and barn to Henry Bedinger and Stephen W. Foreman.
A court suit in Chancery Court decreed that Foreman owned one-third interest in the mill tract of 306 acres and one-third in the Hock tract of land. They were put up at an auction on May 13, 1829. Bedinger had pulled down the old log mill and built the beautiful, native limestone mill building in 1816.
The notice in the Martinsburg Gazette read as follows: "The Hoke tract has the largest limestone spring in Berkeley County. The 300 acre tract is improved with a merchant mill, dwelling house, kitchen and large barn, all built of stone. Also a miller house and sundry outbuildings."
Bedinger purchased the one-third interest giving him full ownership. Major Bedinger did not live on the Lick Plantation but at his 1802 stone house, Protuma, south of Martinsburg. Later the area around the mill took the name of Bedington after Bedinger. (After the death in 1843 of Bedinger, Elizabeth Bedinger Davenport inherited the Bedington Lick Mill tract with 306 acres and the adjoining Hoke tract of 154 acres. At her death in 1865, the Bedington tract then went to Frances W. Gibson, wife of John Thomas Gibson, who sold the Lick Farm in 1865 to John and Emanuel Kennedy). A court case developed and the Lick Farm was sold for ,250 to John Kennedy.
